The Dragon Egg has been on Habbo since October 24 2002, where it was first released on the UK hotel as part of a Quest for Spyro promotional campaign (hence the egg's purple colour).

It was released via the Catalogue in some hotels, and competition prizes in others.

The Dragon Egg was released on most hotels with the notable exception of Singapore who did not receive the rare before the Merge occurred.

The Dragon Egg used to be a completely unique item, with no other similar item (except potentially the Pop Up Chicken from the Easter line released in 2009. However, in 2012 and 2013, recoloured versions of the Dragon Egg were released - the Easter Dino Egg and Black Dino Egg LTD rares. The Pearl Dragon Egg is also very similar (although has clouds instead of leaves at the base) and was released in September 2012.

Controversy

Easter badge

Some controversy surrounded the Dragon Egg during to a competition in Easter 2011.

The prize on the International hotel was intended to be a Dragon Egg and a badge, with players having to go through many rooms and count the eggs within them - if they got it right they would be in a draw to win the egg. The competition rooms were extremely difficult according to players, and often had long queues. However, Habbo staff wrongly listed in an article that entrants had to count the Easter ducks, not eggs. The article was changed after the mistake was spotted, and staff gave the winner the Dragon Egg for the 'wrong' (1024) answer (based on the original article). The 'correct' answer was 1053.

There were many complaints filed. At the time, Habbo made an urgent Help Request message saying that those who entered the wrong answer of 1024 eggs were incorrect. Eventually, Habbo gave everyone who entered near the answer the badge.
