Habbo Avatars
Habbo Avatars is a NFT (non-fungible token) project, launched in September 2021[1].
The project involves the 'minting' (a process of turning digital art into part of the Ethereum blockchain) 11,600 unique, randomly generated Habbo Avatars, which are then bought and sold on an NFT marketplace platform.
Originally, it was announced that 12,500 Avatars would be available in total, however it was announced via Discord on 1 October 2021 that 900 were 'burnt' (e.g. will never become available).
The Avatars were minted starting on 27 September 2021 and were available to purchase from 28 September 2021. They sold out just over 29 hours after release and generated over $6million in sales. The project also generates money in royalty fees each time a Habbo Avatar or Portrait is sold.
The project was planned by Sulake's in-house team, masterminded by Muumiopappa, a member of the Sulake team based in Finland and previously the lead game designer for Hotel Hideaway.
Avatars
There are 11,600 unique Avatars available in total during this project. 10,000 of these NFTs were available via the Dutch Auction, with 1,000 further reserved for the Habbo community, and the remainder for 'internal use' and giveaways.
The Avatars are all unique and are programmatically generated from 284 different traits.
Traits include: gender, face, face accessory, eye accessory, hair, hat, head accessory, shirt, jacket, chest accessory, pants, shoes, waist accessory, effect, colour palette, complexion and hair colour. 74 of these traits were newly designed for the Avatars and had never been seen before in Habbo.
Some of the traits are rarer than others, but each Avatar is guaranteed to have at least one trait that is completely new to Habbo.
At first, all Avatars were randomised with traits hidden, and kept anonymous with a holding image being displayed on OpenSea. The full Avatar including the rare traits were revealed early on 5 October 2021.

Distribution
The NFT Avatars were auctioned through the Habbo Avatars website (nft.habbo.com), utilising a major NFT marketplace, OpenSea. Avatars are purchasable with ETH (Ethereum), a cryptocurrency released in 2015.
According to the NFT FAQs[5], the Avatars are "premium products aimed primarily at NFT collectors", not necessarily existing Habbo players.
It was originally estimated that these NFTs would generate around $4million, a target exceeded by a further $2million, which Habbo confirmed in a tweet[6] was to be "reinvested back into the game".
Auctioned Avatars
10,000 of the Avatars were minted from 27 September 2021. They were originally spotted on OpenSea on 27 September, where 332 Avatars were added, allocated for 'internal use'. This increased to ~550 before the sale, and a further 200 were minted during the first few hours of the sale - totalling around 700 'internal use' Avatars by the end of the initial auction. Before the auction began, one NFT appeared to have been sold at a price of 3ETH, however this was quickly removed.
The anonymous Avatars were released for sale at 12pm BST/7AM EST/9pm AEST on the NFT website in a Dutch auction - an auction method where items are initially offered at a top price which slowly decreases.
The original sale price was 0.5 ETH, which at the time converted as:
Currency | Price |
---|---|
GBP (£) | £1,063.97 |
USD ($) | $1,454.59 |
CAD ($) | $1,837.35 |
EUR (€) | €1,244.99 |
AUD ($) | $2,000.62 |
BRL (R$) | R$7,884.46 |
Under Dutch auction rules, the original price decreased by 0.01 every hour with the potential to fall to a 'floor' price of 0.1ETH until they all sold.
The sale continued for just over 29 hours and reached a floor price of 0.21ETH (plus a hefty transaction fee as the Ethereum trading volume went skyrocketing) at which point they quickly sold out. The value of all Habbo Avatars sold reached $6,018,595.00 according to the Etherscan contract value[7].
Azerion employee Avatars
Of the remaining 2,500, 1,400 Avatars were set aside for Azerion employees (the parent company of Sulake who own Habbo). This was announced in the project Discord FAQs. This number was drastically reduced later with 900 'burned' and not minted.
Community Avatars
1,000 further Avatars were reserved for the existing Habbo community, although the method of distribution was not announced or confirmed until 25 November when it was announced that the Avatars would be given away to Habbos who registered their interest via a poll in the Welcome Lounge. To be eligible, the Habbo entering had to have been created prior to 01 Jan 2020, and must have logged at least 100 hours of activity between 01 January 2021 and 24 September 2021. Avatars were rewarded in order of most activity downwards, for example a user who spent 300 hours online would be ahead in the queue of someone logging 200 hours, and so on. The number of Avatars per hotel was split roughly to fit the split of userbase:
Hotel | Number of winners |
---|---|
Habbo.com.br | 240 |
Habbo.es | 240 |
Habbo.com | 240 |
Habbo.de | 60 |
Habbo.fr | 60 |
Habbo.it | 50 |
Habbo.nl | 50 |
Habbo.com.tr | 40 |
Habbo.fi | 20 |
Full eligibility notes were later released on the main site[8].
Concerns were raised over this potentially leaning toward an entire list of agency and booster accounts who typically spend a lot of time logged in but not truly active, to which it was assured that full activity logs would be checked for those selected. When the list of winners[9] was revealed on 16 December 2021 however, it was noted by many eagle-eyed Habbos that a number of names on the list were accounts created beyond the eligibility date, calling the checking methods into question. The distribution of the Avatars from the OpenSea account HabboCommunityVault was temporarily suspended pending re-checks. On resumption of the handout, further problems arose when it was seen that some accounts had erroneously received two Avatars, meaning at least 12 extra Avatars were given out overall.
Further promotional Avatars
A further 100 Avatars were stated to be set aside to be used for giveaways and internally by Sulake. The OpenSea account Habbo however minted 140 in total.
Benefits
2021 Roadmap
While the full functionality was not available from release, Habbo confirmed their intention for the Avatars to be usable in-game[10]. This will include the exclusive effect, "weird and wonderful" exclusive items and active Habbo Club and Builders Club memberships. On the NFT website, a roadmap was published (see below) which lists benefits over the first three months after launch.
The icons on the initial roadmap image appeared to indicate HC, BC and LTD furni releases before integration of the actual Avatars on the hotel. Delays caused by Sulake's stringent quality assurance requirements meant that some of the dates suggested on the early roadmap were pushed back, however integration on the Habbo servers did go live in December as planned, first on Habbo.com in the morning (for Europe) of 22 December 2021 and being live on all hotels just a few hours later.
HC/BC perk
The HC/BC perk went live in the .COM hotel (as a pilot prior to full release across all hotels) on 30 November 2021.
A user who connects their Habbo account to a Metamask wallet containing at least 1 Avatar will have unlimited membership of both Habbo Club and Builders Club. If the connected wallet is later emptied of any Avatars, this perk will end on that account. Having multiple Avatars in one wallet does not increase the benefits, either by adding to the BC furni limit or by adding to the HC Payday perk.
If there is an active subscription to either service on the account prior to linking it with an Avatar-holding wallet, the paid subscription will still run down until it reaches 24 hours remaining. Each day, the system checks for connected accounts and resets the 24 hours, ensuring that the subscriptions do not run out unless the wallet is emptied of Avatars or disconnected from the Habbo account.
NFT furni drops
- Main Article: NFT Furni
On 26 November 2021 it was announced in the Habbo Avatars Discord server that Habbo had been working with Immutable X (IMX), an NFT marketplace platform, to implement an free release of a special NFT furni to Avatar holders - a diamond version of the classic Club Sofa. The sofas were released in December 2021. The sofas are fully usable in Habbo rooms and are individually numbered, similar to Limited Edition Rares that are currently in circulation.
Connected wallets received one NFT sofa per Avatar within them, as long as they were in the wallet at 6pm UTC on 06 December which which was when a "snapshot" of the linked owners was taken for verification and distribution. The sofas are completely separate NFTs that are tradeable individually with no link to the Avatars. The decision to use IMX was governed by the fact there are zero gas fees when using their marketplace, allowing trading to take place far more freely than is possible for many NFTs.
The second round of NFT Furni was released in March 31 with a Holo Steampunk crafting system. Four different types of Holo Steampunks were released and Habbos could get them a number of different ways. All Habbo Avatar and Portrait owners received a Diamond Holo Steampunk.
Further drops have been engineered to give bonus NFTs to holders of Avatars and Portraits.
Advent calendar giveaway
From 1 to 25 December 2021, Habbo held daily giveaways that only owners of a Habbo Avatar or Habbo Portrait could enter. The prizes were NFTs from various collections, including some of the Avatars and Portraits still held by Habbo's own accounts. The "grand prize" given away on Christmas Day was #18974 from the Mutant Ape Yacht Club collection - bought by Habbo for the competition at 6.25ETH, approximately £18,750 GBP at the time. At the time that the prize was won and transferred, the floor price for the MAYC collection had risen to 11.42ETH, translating to just under £35,000 GBP on the day.
Including the Habbo Avatars and Portraits, over 11ETH was spent by Habbo on this giveaway alone.
NFT Badges
Various badges have been made available for holding certain NFTs in a connected wallet. Some of these relate to partnered projects outside of Habbo, intended as an incentive to be a part of both/all involved.

Additional Habbo NFT projects
Sulake, owner of both Habbo and Hotel Hideaway, have confirmed with the launch of the NFT website that making NFTs a part of their games is a "seriously exciting prospect"[11]. Within the NFT website is a statement that they see play to earn as the future of gaming, and see many ideas incorporating modern technology such as NFTs into the games, although initially speaking more broadly: "While we don’t want to talk about our plans in any concrete or confirmatory terms, we do see ourselves moving towards a broader adoption of blockchain technology and NFTs, and the gradual adoption of a play to earn experience in Habbo."
Habbo Portraits
On 28 October 2021 it was announced by Olsoweir in the Habbo Avatars Discord server that a new NFT was coming, exclusively for owners of a Habbo Avatar. This new collection, named Habbo Portraits, are randomly generated head-and-torso Habbo images intended for use as profile pictures. Most current NFTs are entirely for use as profile pictures and nothing more, and some collectors had expressed dismay at the Avatars not being a suitable size for this.
The Habbo Portraits were free to mint (other than the Ethereum 'gas' fee) and can only be minted by the owner of a Habbo Avatar. It was confirmed by Muumiopappa in a Tweet[12] that each Avatar will have the ability to generate one Portrait, for a maximum of 11,600 Habbo Portraits if every owner chooses to mint a Portrait for every Avatar they own. It is not expected that every Avatar owner will use this function, and so it is predicted that if the option to mint Portraits is removed, it will leave far fewer than 11,600 of the secondary NFTs.
Habbo Portraits are tied to the Avatars only in terms of the minting process. Once minted, they are in an entirely different collection that can be traded separately to the Avatars, and they do not look like the Avatar they were minted from - these Portraits are entirely newly generated looks.
Originally it was stated that Portraits were not ever intended to have any integration with Habbo itself; they were purely a profile picture project NFT intended as a bonus to the early owners and holders of Avatars. Owners were able to enter the advent giveaways through December 2021, and more was planned for Portrait owners for 2022 and beyond, often but not always in the same ways as Avatar owners. On 15 December 2021, Olsoweir announced that minting for Portraits would be ending on 4 January 2022, at which point no more would be able to be created and the final rarity levels for those that exist would be set. It was during this announcement that he stated the change in their earlier decision; Portraits "will have utility in the future" and ownership benefits will be considered as part of the overall Habbo NFT project's future plans.
Habbo NFT Server
Almost as soon as the Habbo Avatars were announced, speculation arose as to the possibility of a separate Habbo server exclusively for Avatar owners. Muumiopappa has repeatedly stated that this is an avenue that Sulake are looking into, but that his personal view is that it would be underpopulated with only Avatar owners having access. The intention is to instead collaborate with other NFT projects to "whitelist" entry (much like the Habbo Avatars Discord server) depending on what NFTs a person holds in their wallet - for example, an owner of a Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT could gain access by linking their wallet to the server. There has also been talk of giving separate skins to owners of non-Habbo NFTs, although this would be a generic skin based on their collection (ie: a special mask or outfit that fits for the entire collection) rather than a truly unique full outfit like the 11,600 Avatars.
The project to create a new server has since been titled "Habbo X" (X being the numeral for 10, and this would be the tenth server) which has drawn some fire for its similarity not only to Habbox but also to the old Habbo eXpert program. Work has begun on this new hotel with some key differences rather than being a simple copy and paste of other hotels; Avatar and Portrait owners will be given ways to earn additional NFT credits and create whole new ways of using and distributing them.
NFT Credits
NFT Credits are accumulated by Avatar and Portrait owners, so long as their NFTs are not listed for sale on OpenSea. As with many of the ranked aspects of the project, the number of credits earned is variable depending on the Effect trait.
These credits can be used to craft various other NFT Furni, which burns the credits from circulation. They can also be used to mint NFT Credit Furni as items for display in the game, which can then be redeemed back into spendable NFT Credits as necessary.
NFT Credits are not analogous to regular Credits and cannot be used to purchase regular furni or memberships.
