Real Life
The painting is based on a real life photo shot by Steve McCurry in 1984 titled Afghan Girl.

The photo was shot in a refugee kamp in Nasir Bagh during the Soviet-Afghan war (1979-1989). The girl in the picture is Sharbat Gula and was 13 years old at the time. Her name was unknown for years until a US-led raid on Afghanistan in 2002.

The photo was on the cover of the National Geographic magazine in 1985
