Real Life
The sculpture is based on a sculpture entitled Greyfriars Bobby Fountain that is located in Edinburgh, Scotland. It was created by William Brodie and unveiled in 1873. The statue was commissioned by Lady Burdett-Coutts, who was the acting president of the Ladies Committee of the RSPCA at the time of the sculpture's creation. It is based on a Skye Terrier named Greyfriars Bobby who famously spent 14 years guarding the grave of his owner John Gray before the dog's own death in 1872.
