There are 12,500 unique avatars available for purchase during this project. 10,000 of these NFTs will be available in the Dutch Auction, with 1,000 'for the community'.

The avatars are all unique and are programmatically generated from 284 different traits.

Traits include: gender, face, face accessory, eye accessory, hair, hat, head accessory, shirt, jacket, chest accessory, pants, shoes, waist accessory, effect, colour palette, complexion and hair colour. 74 of these traits will be new to Habbo.

Some of the traits are rarer than others, but each avatar is guaranteed to have at least one trait that is completely new to Habbo.

Auction

The placeholder image for the NFT avatars

The NFT avatars will be auctioned through the Habbo Avatars website Opensea, a major NFT marketplace. Avatars will be purchasable with ETH (Ethereum), a cryptocurrency released in 2015.

10,000 of the avatars were minted during the week beginning 27 September 2021 in a Dutch auction - an auction method where items are offered at a maximum price and slowly decrease.

Of the remaining 2,500, 1,000 have been reserved for the Habbo community (method to sell TBC), a further 1,400 for each Azerion member (the parent company of Sulake). There are further 100 'community' NFTs[2], which it has not yet been announced how they will be allocated.

They were originally put on sale for 3ETH (£6,556 GBP/$9,217 USD at the time). Under Dutch auction rules, the original price will decrease over the course of a week until it reaches a 'floor' price of 0.1ETH. The 'floor' price will then remain steady for a week, before reducing to 0ETH until they are sold out.

According to the NFT FAQs[3], the avatars are "premium products aimed primarily at NFT collectors", not necessarily Habbo players.

It has been estimated that these NFTs will generate around $4million, which Habbo confirmed will be "reinvested back into the game" in a tweet[4].

Benefits

While the functionality will not be available at first, Habbo have confirmed that they do intend for the avatars to be usable in-game[5]. This will include the exclusive effect, 'weird and wonderful' exclusive items and active Habbo Club and Builders Club memberships. On the NFT website, a roadmap was published (see below) which lists benefits over the first three months after launch.

The icons indicate HC, BC and LTD furni releases.

The future

Sulake, owner of both Habbo and Hotel Hideaway, have confirmed with the launch of the NFT website that making NFTs a part of their games is a "seriously exciting prospect"[6]. Within the NFT website is a statement that they see play to earn as the future of gaming, and see many ideas incorporating modern technology such as NFTs into the games, although speaking more broadly: "While we don’t want to talk about our plans in any concrete or confirmatory terms, we do see ourselves moving towards a broader adoption of blockchain technology and NFTs, and the gradual adoption of a play to earn experience in Habbo."
