In the Hotel, muting is a practice of moderation that mutes the player for usually no more than ten minutes. During this time, the player is unable to speak. Mutes are ruled out when a player says something unsuitable to the friendliness of the hotel.

Flooding

If a member sends more than 14 lines within a 30-second time frame, they will be muted for one minute. If a Habbo types more than 4 lines of chat in a row, they will also be muted.

Word Triggers

Saying certain words can result you in a warning from Habbo. These warnings normally relate to sexual phrases such as "bend over".

Room Moderation Mute System

Habbo introduced a new room moderation aspect and feature. This allowed a user with rights in the room to mute a user for a selected time. This is not a global mute but is a room-wide mute until the set time has ceased. The times to mute are either 2 minutes, 5 minutes, or 10 minute time frames.

The Great Mute

The Great Mute Protest

As a result of the Channel 4 Protest about Habbo Hotel, it went on a complete mute. This mute prevented anyone from the chat, the mail, or the console from passing anything through the system. On June 19, Habbo Paul LaFontaine, the CEO of Habbo, announce the Great Unmute. This included a revamp the chat system and an update to moderation.

Limited chat was released to test this new system on Habbo.com, July 6th.

The Channel 4 Investigation

An investigation led by the one and only Channel 4 News Reporting Team in the United Kingdom found regular paedophile activity engaging with ages that are underage. Channel 4 went under an investigation undercover. They pushed their way into Habbo as an 11-year old girl. Multiple sexual encounters were made, including webcam requests.

The Community

Habbos in the community showed their support by equipping candles and standing in formations in rooms, with the Welcome Lounge being a popular choice, and occasionally the Theatredrome. Habbos entering the Welcome Lounge were given a poll to take about the events and their opinions and feedback. They were given a badge for their support, some given trophies.
